ClarionLive show notes for Dec 13 2013

This week's ClarionLive webinar was the wrap-up for the 51 1/2 hour Convert-A-Thon, during which numerous devs, including John, converted their C6 apps to C8/9.

ClarionLive now has its own webinar account! This means longer webinars are possible, but it does come with costs. Donations are gratefully accepted!

Clarion Getting Real - Mike Hanson

When searching for product ideas, build what you need yourself. You already have the domain experience. If you're happy with what you've done, others will probably also be happy with it.

Clarion word of the day - Greg Bailey

PROP:NoHeight and PROP:NoWidth indicate whether the window or control has an omitted height/width parameter. Setting it to true defaults the size. Also PROP:Resize for reports, to adjust the size of text fields.

Mark Goldberg pointed out these are also helpful on images.

Convert-A-Thon wrapup

After 51 1/2 hours the ClarionLive Convert-A-Thon is a wrap! Here are some conversion tips:

  • Start with your dictionary alone (rather than app and dct together) and deal with any issues that come up in the dictionary conversion.
  • Don't get distracted from the webinar - I did and missed a bunch of stuff
  • Remove libs from the project (take a screen shot first or copy the cwproj) - they're probably mostly generated by templates and almost certainly will have changed.
  • The best way to get rid of old templates is to unregister them first, then open the app, save the changes, export the TXA and recreate the app from the TXA (Mike)

Diego came in during the Convert-A-Thon webinar and talked a lot about the Build menu. Mike went over the different functions, including application options for conditional code generation.

Not only do you have toolbar buttons when you have an open app, you also have a slightly different version of these buttons in the Application pad which add extra options.

App-Ref

Mike Gorman showed Ray Creighton's App-Ref cross reference tool, which he feels is still a very useful tool or would be with some enhancements. No confirmation yet from Ray if he will release it to the community.
