Clarion Word of the Day

Mike stumped Greg Bailey with these Clarion words of the day:

UPPERQUARTILE

LOWERQUARTILE

PERCENTILE

These are stats functions that work with queues that return a Real value. For more information see the Statistics Library section in the help. Keep in mind there's also a Finance Library.

Clarion smell of the week: Incomplete Library Class

Not so much a smell as a way to deal with incomplete library classes where you don't have the source.

Bruce Johnson on the new AnyText product

TIP: When searching through text you can use the Navigate Back button (even in C8).

Bruce introduced AnyText, a text translation utility. AnyText uses StringTheory and the freely available GUTS (Global UnThreaded object Store), and lets you do global translation with optional local overrides.

You can use AnyText both for terminology (dialect) changes and for multi-language support. Other features supported include picture support (numbers, dates, times)

One of AnyText's intended uses is in NetTalk.

From the AnyText help:

AnyText allows a user to change the text in your program at runtime. All visible text, including Window Captions, Prompts, Buttons and so on can be translated. This allows you to create multi-language versions of your application, where users can be responsible for translating the text as required.

It also allows users to change terminologey inside a program, even if they are using the same language. This helps to make the program more familiar to users For example in some countries you would use a ZIP CODE in an address, whereas in others this is known as a POSTAL CODE. Even specific words, like color / colour can have different spellings in different countries. AnyText allows this to be tweaked to best fit the user who is using it.

There was also some discussion of a possible December convert-your-C6-app webinar marathon.Â
